The United Nations and Swiss Confederation confirm the physical meeting of the World Data Forum will be postponed to a later date.
A virtual Forum will now be planned on 19 – 21 October 2020 to satisfy the demand for the latest data solutions and thinking to support the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and now more urgently for the monitoring and recovery from COVID-19.
The official site of World Data Forum informs that further details of the programme will be released during this month as well as information on how to engage and take an active part in the virtual Forum.

COVID-19 pandemic and the planning of the third UN World Data Forum
(15 Jun 2020)
Following one of the main recommendations contained in the report entitled “A World That Counts” , presented in November 2014 by the United Nations Secretary-General’s Independent Expert and Advisory Group on Data Revolution for Sustainable Development, the Statistical Commission agreed that a United Nations World Data Forum on Sustainable Development Data (UN World Data Forum) would be the suitable platform for intensifying cooperation with various professional groups, such as information technology, geospatial information managers, data scientists, and users, as well as civil society stakeholders.
Last UN World Data Forum was hosted by the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Authority of the United Arab Emirates from 22 to 24 October 2018 in Dubai. Next UN World Data Forum will be hosted by the Federal Statistical Office of Switzerland from 18 to 21 October 2020 in Bern.
Due to the ongoing uncertainties around the COVID-19 pandemic, the announcement of the programme and opening of registration is postponed until the first week in July. The United Nations together with the Swiss Confederation will decide by this date whether to hold a physical meeting or to postpone it to 2021. To help us plan a scenario where a virtual Forum takes place on 18 – 21 October 2020 as a bridge to a physical meeting in 2021, we would ask all prospective Forum participants to complete the following questionnaire to understand your general opinion, needs and expectations from a virtual format. Please complete the questionnaire by Monday, 15 June 2020.
