Thursday, 21 May 2026 – 10:00 a.m. Chile time (UTC-4)
This videoconference is organized by the United Nations Regional Hub for Big Data in Brazil, in collaboration with the Statistics Division of ECLAC and the National Institute of Statistics of Chile (INE), and is part of a series of webinars dedicated to the Sustainable Development Indicators. The aim is to broaden the regional debate on the use of new technologies and emerging methodologies—such as artificial intelligence, data science, big data, and other alternative data sources—in the production of official statistics and indicators for monitoring the 2030 Agenda. On this occasion, Indigenous data sovereignty was addressed in the context of biodiversity and rights-based governance.
Indigenous Peoples continue to play a fundamental role in preserving the world’s most biodiverse ecosystems, while asserting their sovereign rights in expanding digital environments. Indigenous data sovereignty emerges as a key tool for advancing rights-based approaches in biodiversity governance, spanning from the tangible domains of land and water to the intangible domains of code and the cloud.
Through community examples, regulatory frameworks, and data infrastructures led by Indigenous Peoples, this presentation explores how Indigenous Nations protect knowledge systems, assert governance over ecological and digital territories, and challenge extractivist models of conservation and data use.
