Webinar on Using Mobile Phone Data for Official Statistics on Population

March 9th 2023 - 11 am Chile time (UTC-3)

This webinar is organized by the United Nations Regional Hub for Big Data in Brazil, with the collaboration of the INE of Chile and the Statistics Division of ECLAC. It is part of a cycle of videoconferences that aims to highlight the potential of using mobile phone data for the production of official statistics, and address the challenges for its implementation.

Through the use of mobile phone data, it is possible to estimate the location of the population and its changes in time and space. This can be valuable for applications in the areas of demography, transportation, disaster response, humanitarian aid, internal and external migration, tourism, among others.

These data are different from the data sources traditionally used by Statistical Institutes and, for this reason, present major challenges in areas related to methodology, quality, technology, security, privacy, legislation, and capacity building. All these challenges add to the complexity of incorporating this new source of data into the routine research operations of the institutes, which makes it necessary to share experiences and create a network of cooperation.

On this occasion, the specific case of Using Mobile Phone Data for Official Statistics on Population will be addressed, with the participation of the company Positium and the Flowminder Foundation.
